Those who know me well, know that I love American History and love reminding people of the reasons our amazing nation exists today. As I have watched the news reports roll in this "Holiday Season" about how religious liberties once held dear to previous generations are more curtailed than ever in the public arena; as I consider the Louisiana State Legislator's unanimous adoption of two resolutions demanding the United States Congress pass a law forbidding the US Court System from even hearing "religious" cases, I am reminded of something our First President said:

In his Farewell Address, George Washington referred to religion and morality as the "great pillars of human happiness" and noted: "Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."

Also agreed with G.W. here. Re. the Louisiana state legislature - it's news to me. A thorny matter when a court, in principle a secular body, is to make a ruling on a so-called "religious issue." Of course, what we all worry about then is the legalese defining such "religious issues." Courts can judge ill-advisedly, no matter which particular religion is involved here.

I'd be interested in reading more about the Louisiana state decision if anyone has a link.

My 5th great grandfather worked for George Washington at Mount Vernon. I'm sure that all our Founding Fathers are turning over in their graves. Its hard to believe that everything this country stands for is slowing being chipped away. I wonder what they would say today. Somewhere along in our history we seem to have forgotten why this nation was formed. It seems religion, regardless of what kind, was the main reason for them leaving their home countries. So why change that now.
